May 20-31:
WATERCOLORS by Irene Aunio and Gustav Rosenlof
at Salmagundi; reception 5/22 @6-8pm - all welcome

Finland Center presents two artists, both born in Finland. Although both have practiced their art in the United States, their themes and colors resonate with the viewer who knows Finland — come see for yourself!

Winter roof scapAbout Irene Aunio: "Her hallmark is fluidity, whether her medium is watercolor or oil. Her paintings are typical and colorful in an impressionistic sense. Positive and negative shapes flow freely into one another, geological shapes result from the painting process rather than from programmatic intention. When she paints from nature, she does so without inhibition, taking her easel and palette directly outdoors." —New York Times Art Review, 1988

Gustav Rosenlof says: "I strive for rich saturated colors utilizing the entire value range and a clear sense of design. This is why I have been drawn to the subject of Shaker Architecture. Shaker constructions exhibit a sensibility that is clear and logical, raising utilitarian buildings and objects to art status. Finally, I find delight in how liquid colors wash, flow and blend over the surface of finely crafted paper; how its surface softens and expands to accept the suspended pigments, and then grabbing them and locking them in place, as the paper contracts and dries."

House exchange for your vacation!

Mökki ja saunaWith summer approaching, many Finnish-American families are heading to Finland for their vacation. In Finland, the dollar-euro exchange rate is encouraging travel across the Atlantic. But staying in a hotel can be pricey, especially for a family. And in New York, it's hard even to get a room! In Finland, if you are lucky, you may be able to stay with grandparents or other relatives - but it can cause a strain and limit your stay.

Now, we are initiating a house/apartment exchange for our members. See below for details, but first, you need to SIGN UP as a member! Membership $30 individual/family for a full year. If you got this from a friend, sign up on the mailing list first yourself.

Currently, on our member pages, there is an ad from a family in Iisalmi looking to exchange their lovely lakeside cottage with sauna for a house/apartment in the New York/New Jersey area. This inspired us to initiate a program where our members can exchange apartments/houses/summer cottages with other members across the Atlantic.

So, if you are thinking about travelling between Finland and the US this summer, and would like to offer your dwelling, either in the city or the country (or both), or perhaps your time share at a resort, in exchange for something similar, please look at the ad posted on the member pages and write up what you are looking for and what you offer. Then send it to us at info@finlandcenter.org and we will post it. Be sure to include contact information so that the communications can then happen directly between members. Remember to send us a quick note if you reach an agreement and/or no longer wish the ad listed. And please note, you do need to sign up via the website and pay the membership fee first.  Thank you and good luck!
